Custom Big Turbo CX-7 - Any Tune Suggestions ?

Post by phonk »

So I've made pretty good progress with the current tune on my custom big turbo CX-7. I'm pretty sure the turbo is one size bigger than I should have gotten. Anyways, I am looking for some feedback on how it's looking.
Not sure how accurate the virtual dyno is, but it's suggesting like 450 to 480 whp...
Block is stock and KR is low. The tune I am attaching is after these pulls. WGDC has been corrected, MAF is basically ±2, and timing was pulled a bit in the 3500 - 4000 area at WOT, because I keep spinning the wheels.
I am going to swap out the wastegate spring, since it is a 12lb one. Going to up it to 15lbs so boost can get closer to 29psi.

Any suggestions or comments?
I was thinking of replacing the stock rods with forged, but keeping the pistons the same. Motor is super healthy.
Anyone know what the transmissions on these things can handle?

VirtualDyno is usually pretty accurate, but in this case you may need to check the gear ratios it has in its database for your car because even with this long gearing and a 3800lb car 60-100 of 8+ seconds in 4th or 80-90 of 6+ in 3rd doesn't look like 450whp to me... and with 300-ish g/s of air and like 5 degrees of timing up top that's definitely far from 450whp considering that these engines make about 250-255 crank HP with like 220g/s of air and 13-14 degrees of timing up top (5000-6000rpm).

The turbo is definitely a bit too big for this car, however you're not doing anything to spool it up sooner.

Also, if you replace the rods definitely replace the pistons as well. Get 4032 alloy pistons to keep the engine street friendly and that's about it. But replacing only the connecting rods and not the pistons would be a mistake IMHO...

Thanks for the reply.
Had to add a custom vehicle to virtual dyno for the 2010 Mazda CX-7 FWD 2.3L. The specs were not even close to the 2009 version it had on it. Glad you pointed this out.

It's showing about 300whp, which is exactly what the car feels like. Now I can start adding more power.

What's your suggestion on spooling the turbo quicker? Do I retard timing in the lower RPMs?

Follow that load and RPM line for when you're WOT but the turbo is barely making any boost and enrich the AFRs a bit (low 11s should do) and also retard the timing quite a bit, do not be afraid to go down to 0 or even negative.
But only follow that line only, do not go too much below it because you will end up enriching the AFRs and retarding timing in cruising situations.
Also add more VVT in that area. Like, a lot more, you're at 0 degrees VVT and you should be around 25-30.

Got it. Spooling better now.
Anyway to disable traction control or swas on the cx-7 via versatuner?
