MegaSpool FAQ

Post by Steve @ VersaTune »

What is MegaSpool?

MegaSpool is a custom feature that is included with VersaTuner for Mazdaspeed 3/6, Mazda 3/6 MPS. And Mazdaspeed Axela/Atenza vehicles. MegaSpool allows you to fully spool even large aftermarket turbos at relatively low RPMs while the vehicle is stationary, and during no-lift-shifts.

What is the net result of using MegaSpool?

It means that you come off the starting line with full torque immediately available. There is no need to wait for the turbo to spool up or to rev the engine to crazy high RPMs to try to spool it.

How does MegaSpool work?

MegaSpool increases turbo boost at launch time by diverting combustion energy from driving the pistons to driving the turbine wheel.

How does it do that?

MegaSpool has configurable ignition retard that is applied when Launch Control and/or No-Lift-Shift are active. By retarding ignition timing significantly, more of the combustion energy is transferred to the turbine wheel. This allows the turbo to spool up while the engine is at a relatively low RPM.

How do I configure it?

MegaSpool is configured in the Advanced Settings of the Special Features tab of Tune Customizer which is accessed from the settings page. You can configure MegaSpool to be enabled for Launch Control and/or No-Lift-Shift. You can set timing values for each. These timing values are relative to TDC, override the current calculated timing, and are exempt from the minimum timing settings in the tune. The default values work well for a stock K04 turbo. Larger turbos may need slightly more timing retard. The Launch Control and No-Lift-Shift rev limits can be configured as well. You may need to adjust the rev limit as well as the timing to get the desired boost and rpm at launch.

How do I use it?

MegaSpool, when enabled, is active when Launch Control or No-Lift-Shift are active. Launch Control is active when the accelerator pedal exceeds the Min accelerator pedal position threshold, vehicle speed is below the Max speed for Launch Control, and the clutch pedal is depressed. No-Lift-Shift is active when the accelerator pedal exceeds the Min accelerator pedal position threshold, vehicle speed is above the Max speed for Launch Control, and the clutch pedal is depressed.

Enjoy!
