Spark Plugs

Post by Steve @ VersaTune »

I thought I would take a few minutes to write down some spark plug gap and heat range recommendations.

The topic has probably been well covered elsewhere, but I'll repeat it here just for good measure.

When running increased boost/load, it is recommended to run a heat range cooler plug. Most people, including myself have had good results with the Denso Iridium ITV22. It is one heat range cooler than the stock plug.

You should set the gap based on the boost levels you run.

Stock - 17 PSI .030"
Stock - 117 kPa .762mm

18 - 20 PSI .028"
124 kPa - 138 kPa .711mm

20 + PSI .025"
138+ kPa .635mm

I am fat and lazy and didn't check my gap for a long time. I was up to .042" from 20,000+ miles of wear and was getting horrible spark blow out at 27 PSI. Plugs wear faster at higher boost levels. Check them every other oil change if you run high boost. Every third oil change otherwise.
