So I managed to get my grubby paws on one of these. Installed the sw and drivers that came with it, but it's not a selectable connection option in VT.

It seems very similar to the Ford/Mazda VCM II in design. Installing the VCM II drivers didn't help.

Any thoughts/advice on this?

Are you sure it implements J2534 specification? I did a quick search and could not find information about it being J2534 compatible.
