Re: MPG pre and post tune

Post by samir »

Hi all,
I'm upgrading my 2009 CX-7 (2.3L turbo) for better daily reliability and fuel efficiency. Planning to install:

Smaller turbo

ECU tune

Front-mount intercooler

Separate turbo oil cooler

External oil radiator for the engine and turbo

Cold air intake

Possibly remove the catalytic converter

Main goal: reduce common issues (oil leaks, turbo failure) and improve MPG. Can’t find the 2.5L version in my area. Anyone tried similar setups? Tips or results?

The only things that will improve fuel economy are:
- an ECU tune that implements better efficiency, assuming that is possible with the fuel you are currently using;
- driving habits.

A smaller turbo will not improve fuel economy, will just be a smaller turbo with less top end, because both turbos installed on the CX7 (the 581 on the 244bhp versions and the 882 installed on the 260bhp Euro versions) need to be kept under control at low RPM meaning they are already small enough.

A front mount intercooler will help increasing performance (not MPG) under higher loads.
Separate turbo oil cooler was never done on this platform, not even on very high power cars. External oil radiator for the engine is usually installed on the cars used in circuit raging.

Regarding your main goals, for fixing the oil leaks simply change the leaking gaskets.
